United States edition
How the US edition works
One platform, chosen deliberately. TikTok is the only major platform whose API filters by country, so every post here comes from the US feed. It also proved the freshest and most conversational surface in our platform trials.
Two layers per topic. The base sample searches each topic's query set across the last three months. The viral layer re-runs the same searches sorted by likes over the last seven days, which is what surfaces the week's biggest posts.
Quality gates. Promotional posts, majority non-English text and sub-100-like posts are removed before anything is scored or shown. Topics whose conversation level falls below our health line are flagged "surface check" rather than published quietly.
Topic Heat Index
An Inner Chapter score, not a platform statistic. Each topic is scored 0–100 from the engagement in the gated sample: likes, conversation and recency. The same formula runs on the China edition, so the two markets read side by side.
Tech
US tech content runs as spectacle and utility side by side: a $100k gaming PC build at 355k likes, and save-this smart-home checklists for a future house. ChatGPT sits underneath as routine tooling. The job anxiety that defines China's tech conversation is largely absent here.
Pop Culture
Celebrity carries this topic: relationship-instinct analysis of Zendaya and Tom Holland at 2.6m likes, and grief at scale when Bonnie Tyler died. Fandom crossovers show the breadth - Pokemon card collecting big enough that actors turn up at the table. Star-led where China's equivalent surface is IP-led.
Bars & Clubs
The quietest topic on the index, in both markets now, which starts to look like a truth about the category rather than a sampling accident. What engages sits beside the night out rather than in it: a busker turning Washington Square Park into a 'speakeasy', nostalgia for the club songs of childhood. The venue is a memory and a metaphor; the occasion needs re-arguing.
Generations & Communities
The run club is the live American companionship format, famous enough to satirise ('rub clubs are NOT for running'), and friendship-origin stories are a content genre of their own. Company is arranged around activities here too - the same grammar as China's 搭子 culture wearing trainers.
Food & Drink
Feeding people is the emotional language: a tribute to a mother who 'always loved feeding her friends' at 2.2m likes. The other pole is accountability - a bad restaurant experience in Dallas went viral within two days. Meals as care and as consumer justice, both at scale.
Luxury & Prestige
Luxury reads as lifestyle performance played half as a joke: 'opinionated diva' family content under #oldmoneyaesthetic, Chanel in a birthday get-ready ritual. The aspiration is real and knowingly staged at once. Mid-table heat (60) - present, not surging.
Design Directions
Low heat (36), and what works is anti-new: 'the older the robe the better' at 1.2m likes, a Rome street artist rebuilding a table. Patina and craft carry the aesthetic conversation; there is no named movement leading it the way 新中式 leads China's.
Travel
The feeling outruns the destination: 'traveling alone is always different' at 3.6m likes, airline rituals as shared humour. The same finding as China from a different angle - travel content sells the emotional state and the departure, with the place itself second.
Shopping
The TikTokMadeMeBuyIt cycle runs at full speed - a moldable butter bar as this month's viral object - while the grocery haul has become a confessional format ('I will not be reading comments'). Buying is content; showing the spend invites judgement, and creators pre-empt it.
Work
Work content is venting and coping: baristas performing impossible customers at 1.5m likes, office workers talking cortisol management in wellness vocabulary. The draw is the feeling of work and the release from it - the US version of the clock-off moment China's surface centres on.
Economy
Second on the index (99). Cash-stuffing envelopes, paycheck budget breakdowns, and 'I don't have the funds' humour - method and honesty together, the same competent, unashamed money register as China's saving culture, in dollars.
Sustainability
Top of the US index. Thrift is its engine - $40 Goodwill-bin hauls worn as trophies - alongside zero-waste kitchen habits and, notably, pro-nuclear energy explainers pulling viral numbers. Sustainability lands as bargain pride and energy debate, with almost no policy language in the sample.
Observations
Sustainability (100) and Economy (99) lead the first American index, and they are the same story told twice: thrift hauls worn as trophies, cash-stuffing budgets, 'I don't have the funds' humour. Money competence is the confident register of US content right now, and it mirrors the value mood topping the China edition - two markets, one attitude to spending.
Bars & Clubs sits at the bottom of both markets' indices, and the American sample shows the same shape as the Chinese one: the strongest content is beside the night out rather than in it - a park turned 'speakeasy' by a busker, nostalgia for the club songs of childhood. Affection for the culture is intact in both countries; the visit is what has gone quiet. For the category, the occasion needs rebuilding from feelings and company, and whoever supplies the reason to be in the room collects the affection that is already there.
Across topics, the feeling outruns the thing: solo-travel departures beat destinations, the getting-ready beats the luxury dinner, the grocery haul is a confession before it is a shop. American occasions are emotional states first and places second - the same finding China produced through 微醺 and 搭子, in a different accent.
